ST vs LT vs P — What's the Difference?
- ST (Special Trailer): Stiffer sidewalls, higher load capacity, designed for towed loads.
- LT (Light Truck): Built for trucks under load — not optimized for trailer sway dynamics.
- P (Passenger): Comfort-tuned for driven vehicles — not safe for trailer use.
Load Range & Ply Rating
Common load ranges: C (6-ply) for light trailers, D (8-ply) for mid-size, E (10-ply) for heavy boats and large RVs. Match your trailer sticker — or bring it in and we’ll spec it correctly.
Speed ratings on ST tires also matter — most ST tires are rated to 65–87 mph. Don’t outrun your tires.

ST stands for 'Special Trailer' — these tires are engineered with stiffer sidewalls and higher load capacity than passenger (P) or light truck (LT) tires, designed specifically for trailer use rather than driven vehicles.
We don't recommend it. Passenger and LT tires lack the sidewall stiffness ST trailer tires have, and they're not rated for the static loads, sway, and lateral stress trailers experience. Using the wrong tire can lead to blowouts and trailer sway.
Most ST trailer tires should be replaced every 3-5 years regardless of tread depth, due to UV and ozone-driven sidewall aging — especially in Southern California sun.
